ONTARIO, SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY — October 22, 2026. A major new dining and retail development has been announced for the southwest corner of Archibald Avenue and Inland Empire Boulevard in Ontario. The city said on October 20 that Porto’s Bakery & Café intends to open its first Inland Empire location there, with construction expected to start in 2027 and the bakery projected to open in 2028.
What exactly is planned at the site?
The proposed development occupies approximately 8.6 acres and includes an estimated 50,000 square feet of commercial space across three buildings. The city describes a mix of restaurants, cafés and retailers, plus an outdoor plaza incorporating landscaping, water features and outdoor seating.
Porto’s is intended as an anchor tenant. This means the bakery is a major draw for the project, not that the entire 50,000-square-foot development will be a single Porto’s store. As plans progress, the project may attract additional tenants beyond the initial announcement.
What about hiring and the local economy?
Ontario’s Economic Development Agency says the new retail destination could generate hundreds of local jobs. That is the city’s projection for the broader development, not a verified figure for positions that are open for applications today. Specific hiring dates, hourly wages, opening schedules and lease details have not been independently announced as finalized in the source.
The planned site is near Interstate 10 and in a growing commercial corridor that already includes hotels, entertainment facilities and other businesses. Increased dining and shopping traffic may eventually affect local roads and parking, but the city’s press release does not provide a final traffic impact study for the project.
Why Porto’s is a notable regional brand
Founded in 1960 by Rosa Porto, the family-owned bakery has become a recognizable Southern California chain associated with Cuban-inspired pastries and savory dishes. The Ontario location would bring a permanent shop to Inland Empire customers who previously traveled farther west to visit existing stores.
When is opening day?
The official schedule remains a projection: construction in 2027 and anticipated opening in 2028. Ontario has not supplied an exact grand-opening date in the October 20 announcement. Readers should not mistake a development announcement for a restaurant already under construction or accepting customers.
